Biographical / Historical

The Davenport family of North Augusta, South Carolina, and Augusta, Georgia, were prominent community members whose professional and civic contributions spanned the early to mid-twentieth century. Dr. Robert Campbell Davenport, his wife Louise Bailey Davenport, and their daughter Mary Elizabeth Davenport Vaughn were each active in the region’s educational, religious, and civic life.

Dr. Robert Campbell Davenport (1875–1940s) was a pharmacist and business owner in Augusta. Born in Cross Hill, South Carolina, he studied at Presbyterian College in Clinton and the Atlanta Pharmaceutical School before establishing Davenport & Edmunds Pharmacy. He was active in the Liberty Spring Presbyterian Church and the North Augusta Masonic Lodge.

His wife, Louise Bailey Davenport, was born in Old Ellenton, South Carolina, the daughter of Dr. Angus W. and Louise Bradford Bailey. A North Augusta resident from 1917 until her death, she participated in numerous civic organizations, including the North Augusta First Baptist Church, the Augusta Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Lewis Loan Company, where she served on the Board of Directors.

Their daughter, Mary Elizabeth Davenport Vaughn (1912–2011), was an educator and librarian. She earned degrees from Converse College and Emory University and served as librarian at the Junior College of Augusta (now Augusta State University). Vaughn was active in heritage and historical organizations, holding leadership roles within the Daughters of the American Revolution and other cultural associations.
