Biographical or Historical Information
Established in 1780 to administer the Academy of Richmond County, the Trustees of the Academy of Richmond County also functioned in the earliest days of the city, upon the end of Colonial rule, as the government of the city of Augusta. When city government became firmly established, the Trustees continued to exercise great influence in their original function; to oversee the success and continuance of the Academy of Richmond County in its mission to prepare young men for higher learning. The reputation of the Trustees made them the obvious choice to administer other charitable bequests or foundations; hence their role in administering the William Robinson Trust Fund, the Tubman Home, the Porter Fleming Foundation and various other legacies. In turning over the Academy of Richmond County to the Richmond County School Board, the Trustees ceased active administration of an educational institution but continued to be involved with the formation of the Academy of Richmond County by overseeing the procurement of the land on which the current institution is situated. The Trustees continue to administer the old academy building on Telfair for the benefit of Augusta and to oversee many charitable responsibilities.
Material was transferred to Reese Library Special Collections by an informal arrangement in 1978. A deed of deposit was completed in 2010.
