Biographical or Historical Information
Albert Von Kamp Gary (1921-2005) was born in Augusta, Georgia in 1948. He attended Richmond Academy, the Junior College of Augusta, and the University of Georgia. He served in the 19th Battalion of the US Marines Corps Reserve Unit, and was at the battles of Midway, Guadalcanal, and Iwo Jima. He received a Silver Star Medal as a Company Commander at Guadalcanel and a Gold Star Medal as a Battalion Commander at Iwo Jima. He married Martha Kelly and the couple had 5 children: Laura, Irene, Mary, Albert, and Thomas. Gary was very involved in his local community, and was a member of St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church, the Augusta Country Club, the Augusta Assembly, the Richmond County Historical Society, the Beech Island Agricultural Club, and the Society of Colonial Wars.
